Your new cadet is stepping into one of the most challenging and transformative experiences available to young leaders. The Rat Line, and their whole cadetship, will test them, stretch them, and grow them in ways that will surprise you.

 

As you support them through the next 4 years, these principles may help you stay grounded:

• Clarity beats chaos. Stay steady and present, even when communication is limited.

• Purpose drives resilience. Your cadet chose VMI for a reason — return to that purpose often.

• Not every battle needs fighting. Give them space to struggle, learn, and emerge stronger.

• Momentum comes from alignment. Encourage them, believe in them, and stay connected to your shared values.

 

You are not alone in this. Alumni — including me — are proud to stand with you and your new cadet as they begin this extraordinary journey.

Alpha Kappa, for example, is a group of women alumnae united by shared VMI experiences and guided by the values of honor, discipline, moral courage, and selfless service. We are committed to supporting each other and the Corps through mentorship, service, and community engagement.

A 2007 graduate, Air Force veteran, best‑selling author, and leadership strategist, I continue to champion the VMI mission because of the enduring value it provides. My work centers on helping leaders turn strategy into momentum by reducing friction, clarifying priorities, and strengthening alignment. This work is grounded in the integrity, discipline, and habits forged during my cadetship.
